Diploma of Remedial Massage - HLT50307

The Diploma of Remedial Massage is a logical extension of the Certificate IV in Massage Therapy Practice, and is a natural progression for students wishing to further their studies and improve their potential as a comprehensive remedial therapist.

This couse includes a detailed study of the human body's pathologies and of specific therapeutic techniques to address many of these, including postural analysis, stretching, exercise, deep tissue massage, muscle energy and proprioceptor neuromuscular facilitation techniques (MET/PNF), and the use of trigger points for soft tissue dysfunctions.  Lymphatic drainage, sports, mother and child massage are also included in this course.  A study of managing chronic illness in the context of remedial masssage treatment is also covered in this course.  Students also learn the knowledge and skills of practice management.

Qualified students will be able to practice and gain insurance with professional associations and are able to obtain registration with Health Funds.

Pre-requisite: Competency in all units that form Certificate IV in Massage, except HLTCOM405C (Administer a Practice).

Duration: 12 months full time

Fees: $6174.00 (Books are included in the fees).

Award: Successful students are awarded a Diploma of Remedial Massage.

Clinical Health Care

This unit covers pathology, and introduces basic bio-chemistry and pharmacology.  You will learn how to apply this knowledge in a health care environment.

Remedial Massage Theory and Practice.  This module is made up of the following 5 sections:

Biomechanics

This section covers human movement and biomechanics, sports medicine, orthopaedic tests and exercise therapy.

Lymphatic Drainage

This section teaches a specialised form of manual body therapy, applicable to a variety of problems associated with lymphedema. In this unit you will learn techniques involved in giving an effective full body lymphatic drainage massage.

Deep Tissue

This section defines application of deep pressure to muscles or therapy to the deeper lying muscle groups. May aid in resolving long term chronic issues. The aim is to transform dysfunctional characteristics of body soft tissues to minimize pain/stress and enhance function.

Trigger Point

Knowledge of trigger points and skills in deactivating them are essential in the treatment of muscular pain caused by trauma, poor posture and repetitive injuries.

MET/PNF

Muscle Energy Technique (MET) is a collective name for a variety of techniques that stretch, strengthen or break down fibrous adhesions.Proprioceptor Neuromuscular Facilition (PNF) rlelates to the

Sports Massage

This module aims to teach students massage to 'enhance performance' of an athlete, how to treat minor injuries and release tight and restricted muscles to increase flexibility.

Work with Chronic Illness

In this module you will learn how to consider the range of chronic illness a client may present with, and how to adapt your history taking and management of the case.

Massage for Women and Children

This module teaches the knowledge and skills for dealing with the special needs of women (esp. pregnant women) and chidren.

Practice Management

This module trains you in the relevant skills and knowledge required in operating your own clinic as a remedial massage therapist.

Integrated Remedial Therapies

This is the last module of the Diploma before clinic commences.  It covers the particular needs that clients may have, including the areas of mental health and palliative care.

Remedial Massage supervised student clinic - 120 hours (60 hours are in Certificate IV in Massage)

This is conducted at the College training rooms, with a Supervisor on site to support as well as assess you while you gain increasing confidence in your knowledge and skills in addressing clients in a true clinic setting open to the general public.
